The most problematic ingredient in meat-based dog food is the meat itself. There have been multiple recalls in pet food over the past years and almost all of them because of some form of contamination associated with meat-based dog foods.

Recalls tend to be associated with mycotoxins although globally they have been associated with toxic chemicals like Melamine, euthanasia drugs and animal growth hormones.

Other commonly reported offending food sources were soy (6 %), corn (4 %), egg (4 %), pork (2 %), fish and rice (2 % each).

Symptoms of a food allergy are usually itchy skin, paws, or ears or digestive disturbances such as vomiting or diarrhoea. Other more subtle changes can also occur, including hyperactivity, weight loss, lack of energy, and even aggression.
